Inside the workbook

Sample debts ship with the file so you can click through before replacing the yellow cells. These previews use that sample: Avalanche, $250.00 extra per month, starting November 2026.

How it works

  1. 1

    Add your debts

On Debts, enter up to 15 names, balances, APRs, and minimum payments. Sample rows are included. Leave unused rows blank.

  2. 2

    Pick a strategy

On Plan, choose Avalanche (highest interest first), Snowball (smallest balance first), or a custom payoff order, and set your extra monthly payment.

  3. 3

    Read the schedule

Schedule builds a month-by-month plan out to 30 years. Same-month rollover moves freed-up money to the next target debt in the same month.

  4. 4

    Check the finish line

Dashboard shows your debt-free month, total interest, interest saved versus minimums-only, and chart-ready progress.

Avalanche, Snowball, or custom

Switch payoff order anytime. Schedule and Dashboard recalculate, including same-month rollover.

A real payoff date

Months to freedom, plus the month you clear the last balance on this plan.

Interest saved, in view

Compare this plan with an estimate of paying minimums only, then watch the balance fall.

Common questions

  • Which apps does this work in?

Microsoft Excel 2016 or newer and Microsoft 365, Google Sheets via File → Import, and Apple Numbers via File → Open. There are no macros.

  • Do I need to know spreadsheet formulas?

No. Cream and yellow cells are yours to edit. Light gray cells are formulas — leave them alone. Sample debts are already filled in so the charts work before you change anything.

  • What is the difference between Avalanche, Snowball, and a custom order?

Avalanche pays the highest APR first and usually costs less interest. Snowball pays the smallest balance first so you get faster early wins. Custom payoff order uses the sequence you set. Pay minimums on everything else, and put your extra payment plus freed-up minimums into the current target. Same-month rollover moves that freed-up money to the next debt in the same month. Switch the plan anytime and the schedule recalculates.

  • How many debts can I track?

Up to 15 debts and a 30-year schedule. Leave unused debt rows blank.

  • Will the charts work in Apple Numbers?

Core calculations recalculate in Numbers: debts, the Avalanche/Snowball toggle, the schedule, the payoff month, and interest saved. Embedded Excel charts may look different or be missing after import. The Dashboard still has chart-ready columns (Month #, Total Balance, Cumulative Interest, Cumulative Paid) so you can select them and use Insert → Chart. If the mode dropdown does not import, type Avalanche or Snowball in the mode cell.

  • What do I receive?

Debt_Payoff_Tracker.xlsx in $, £, and € editions, plus a short README covering Excel, File → Import into Google Sheets, and File → Open in Apple Numbers. The workbook includes a monthly check-in tab. Instant digital download. Nothing ships. Personal use only — do not resell or redistribute the file.

  • Is this financial advice?

No. It is a planning estimate, not financial, tax, or legal advice. Interest is estimated as monthly = Balance × (APR ÷ 12). Lender statements can differ because of day-count, fees, or compounding.
